Spring Landscape Clean-Up Checklist

Spring cleaning doesn’t just apply to the inside of your home – your landscape needs a little TLC, too. And the transition from frigid winter weather to warm and sunny days makes now a terrific time to get outside.

So, to help you get your landscape looking its best, we’ve created the following checklist.

❑ Clean-Up Debris and Clear Out Clutter

A good way to kick things off is by clearing from your lawn and gardens any debris and clutter, such as leaves, sticks, dead plants, and trash. This not only helps your lawn look neater, but also allows more moisture and light to reach those plants that need it. And while you’re at it, instead of sending all of winter’s detritus to the landfill, consider putting any organic material into a compost heap. Your garden will love you for it.

❑ Prune and Trim Trees and Shrubs

Spring is a great time to lop off dead limbs and leaves from your trees and shrubs. However, be careful when cutting those limbs that are still growing, since some plants shouldn’t be pruned until fall or winter. But for those trees and shrubs that can be trimmed in spring, pruning will help give them shape and will promote growth. (There are numerous online resources, including county Extension websites, that can help you determine when to prune plants.)

❑ Aerate

Over time, soil can become compacted, preventing water, air, and nutrients from reaching the roots of grass and other plants. So, to help those roots grow deeper and stronger – and your lawn grow healthy and thick -- you’ll need to aerate.

There are several methods you can use to aerate your lawn, depending on the equipment you choose. You can use a spike aerator, slicing aerator, or plug aerator. The experts at Acre highly recommend the plug aerator, since it’s the most efficient and less likely to do damage in the hands of someone who’s inexperienced in such work. That said, if you’re not feeling confident in your aeration skills, Acre will gladly come and do it for you!

❑ Apply Fertilizer and Weed Control

Applying fertilizer and weed control products definitely helps prepare your lawn for the growing season. Fertilizer will give your grass the nutrients it needs to grow healthy and green, while weed control is necessary to keep weeds from overtaking your lawn.

There are, however, numerous types of both products, so if you’re not sure which product to apply, contact your local garden center or county Extension office and ask for recommendations for your type of grass or the weeds you’re trying to control. Also, be sure to follow application instructions on the labels of the products you use.
